'WHAT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY HAS TAUGHT ME' | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, TOLD BY PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY| JUST BEING MEG

The saying it's not about what you know, it's about who you know... I suppose is half true, and if it's not true,  it helps that's for sure.

I've worked in social media and marketing for approximately 3 years now and in that time have collated a network of professionals across multiple industries.

This week, I had the privilege of interviewing 7 different professionals who have made careers out of their passions, to provide you with the best knowledge to help get you kick-started in the industry you want to be in.

MARKETING

Meet Sophie. Sophie is 23 years old from Cheltenham and is the owner of the @prettylittlemarketer page on Instagram, which is full of girl boss, inspiring content, to help kick start your career in marketing.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN MARKETING?

"I've studied marketing for 2 years but I landed my first marketing job 5 months ago, as a Marketing Assistant at a digital marketing agency."

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MARKETING?

"I am totally underqualified for my role and was up against graduates with much more experience than I have, but what I think landed me the role and gave me the opportunity to get into the industry was my interview performance! I stayed calm and kept it real, if I didn't have experience in a programme I was asked about, I'd be honest and say no and show my enthusiasm and hunger to learn more about it, despite my lack of experience."

WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO START A CAREER IN MARKETING?

"My career advice would be to show you're open and wanting to learn; get some online courses on your CV, get talking to industry professionals through LinkedIn, actively seek opportunities to learn and grow your knowledge of marketing but also yourself!"

ADVERTISING

Meet Jack. Jack is a 23-year-old Account Executive, at a London based media agency. Jack has taken his Masters in Psychology and his passion for the subject, merging it with a career in advertising.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN ADVERTISING?

"I’ve now been in digital marketing since November 2018 and working as a campaign and an account executive during that time for Altair Media."

HOW DID YOU GET INTO ADVERTISING?

"I first got into the advertising world during work experience when I was 15, working at an advertising agency in London. During the summers that followed this, I also did month-long internships at a larger advertising company and absolutely loved it there working on high profile food, retail and mobile technology brands. This started my passion for the industry and media/marketing in particular, so after leaving University in the summer of 2018 I then specifically looked for digital marketing roles and found myself where I am now."

WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO START A CAREER IN ADVERTISING?

"Be confident! Especially for someone entering the marketing world for an account management role. You’re going to become an expert in your field, so completely own it and show just how great you are! Also, definitely have fun! It’s an ever-changing, creative, exciting industry. Marketing and advertising agencies have the best atmospheres, make sure you’re enjoying what you do and it’ll help you go a long way."

PHOTOGRAPHY / VIDEOGRAPHY

Meet Jordan. Jordan is a London based photographer and videographer. He freelances his craft and has worked across multiple industries, showcasing his talents across his Instagram and his YouTube channel.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY?

"I've been working in the industry for about 5 years now."

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY?

"I got into film making and photography through gaming, I wanted to make a YouTube channel to broadcast my gameplay and then from there I learnt how to edit. Then started practising with real footage and built up a showreel to pitch to brands."

WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO START A CAREER IN PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY?

"My advice would be from a creative point of view, is to create as much content as you can and not to worry about what people will think. Just do you."

FASHION DESIGN

Meet Rida. Rida is in the process of launching her own brand and has worked for some big designers such as Ralph & Russo. Rida uses her Instagram to showcase her incredible eye for style.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN FASHION DESIGN?

"I officially started working in this industry when I interned for Ralph and Russo in the Couture Embroidery department and then later at the RTW Pattern Cutting department, during my second year at uni, I also freelanced for them after I graduated and continue to freelance every now and then alongside my main brand which I am currently in the process of making."

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FASHION DESIGN?

"I got into this industry because of my mum she was a really big interior designer in Pakistan so I was always interested in being creative, she used to teach me how to sew, how to fabric source etc. I was constantly inspired by her and her work but my culture too which is so vibrant and lively so I developed a really good eye for fabric sourcing and creating colour palettes. I always knew since I was little that fashion designing is what I wanted to do because my mum sometimes would make my clothes and I would go fabric shopping with her and pick what fabrics and colours I liked and I was just so passionate about it from a young age that it became pretty official when I came to do my A-levels and then chose to do a bachelors at Fashion Designing at uni."

WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO START A CAREER IN FASHION DESIGN?

"My advice for anyone who wants to start a career in the fashion designing industry would be to start looking at internships even before you get to uni, perhaps try doing an internship before you go to uni it's not possible at some companies but smaller companies do take you on. I would also advise people to intern at both small and large companies. I did both and with both, you get different set of skills and learning curves and with internships that's what it's all about picking up various sets of skills and trying to see what you enjoy best. My third piece of advice would be to keep in touch with people in the industry from your internships and social media makes that relatively easy because the more connections you have the further you will get in this industry! Connections are key, make sure to work hard and keep your head down and make sure you have a few skills really well practised out so others can learn from you at R&R I showed the girls how to Aari embroidery which is a traditional embroidery in Pakistan and they loved it, it was something new they can learn from me too. They allowed me to learn but they were also learning from me too which is a great experience."

SOCIAL MEDIA

Meet Abby. Abby has launched her own company at just 22 years old. As well as social and digital media management Abby has a talent in design and has been doing paintings and illustrations all her life.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO SOCIAL MEDIA?

"I actually got into the industry due to a university course I enrolled in. We had to do a placement as a part of the course and my tutor recommended I help a local film theatre with their social media and content and I absolutely loved it! I continued from there looking for social media related experiences."

WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO START A CAREER IN SOCIAL MEDIA?

"My advice would be to get as much experience as possible, but also that things don’t happen overnight, and don’t expect them too! There has been a lot of trial and error in starting my own company and doing social media managing in general. It’s an industry that is forever changing! But it is also incredibly rewarding and amazing when you get your first client!"

WHY YOUR BUSINESS SHOULD START A PODCAST RIGHT NOW | BEGINNERS PODCASTING TIPS FOR BRANDS OR INDIVIDUALS | JUST BEING MEG

With over 850,000 active podcasts in the world right now, with a 300,000 increase since 2018 (according to Apple at WWDC) now more than ever is the time to start a podcast.  But what actually does it take to make a podcast? and where the hell do you start? Today's post discusses why your business should start a podcast right now! So the term podcasting is thought to of come from a mix of iPod and broadcasting and was first suggested by a BBC journalist named Ben Hammersley. To put it simply, podcasting is the form of recording audio episodes and making them available to listen to online.  Podcasts are most popular to listen to via smartphone and are the number one platform for podcast consumption, which is no surprise due to the rapid decline in PC and tablet usage.  Unknown to most, podcasts can actually be monetised by selling ad time in between the episodes. Podcasts are also a great way of tapping into a younger audience, with 18-44-year-olds making up 67% of the podcast audien

MORE THAN JUST MUSIC | WHY CREATIVE MARKETING COUNTS EVEN IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

The music industry has changed immensely over the years. Releasing music today is so much more than just a song or an album. There's a lot of clever marketing behind some of our most favourite music. Today you need to treat marketing music the same way you market any product. It has to be on  brand and it has to grab peoples attention fo r it to sell.  Recently I discovered some incredible marketing for Marshmello  and Demi Lovato's upcoming single 'Its Ok Not To Be Ok'. So far, we have no idea what the song sounds like (apart from a teaser clip Demi released over on her Instagram). However, in the countdown to the single, there is a website available  which I think is some of the most exciting creative marketing I've seen in a while.  DEMI LOVATO X MARSHMELLO: OK NOT TO BE OK PROMO SITE The website opens up in an old school Windows browser style page, with automatic pop-ups of a playlist and mood quiz. The mood quiz determines how you're feeling overall and if
